Israeli commandos kill at least 16 unarmed humanitarian volunteers

(CHICAGO, 05/31/2010) – Protests against Israel’s dealy aggression against the unarmed humanitarian aid volunteers aboard the Freedom Flotilla are breaking out across the globe.

People of conscious all over the world were horrified Sunday to watch Israeli commandos intercept the Mavi Marmara in international waters. Israeli military gunfire killed at least 16 unarmed civilians and wounded more than 50 in the five vessels that were transporting donated medical and humanitarian supplies to the besieged people of Gaza.

US to focus on homegrown extremists

The US president’s new national security strategy will focus on the threat posed by homegrown extremists, his counter-terrorism chief says.

Barack Obama will also de-emphasise the “war on terror” concept favoured by his predecessor, George Bush, and make clear that the US is not at war with Islam when he releases the strategy on Thursday, said John Brennan, the deputy national security adviser for counter-terrorism and homeland security.

Deaths in Pakistan mosques raids

Assailants with guns and grenades have attacked two mosques in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore, killing at least 76 people.

The co-ordinated assaults on mosques of the minority Ahmadi sect wounded scores more in different residential neighbourhoods of the city shortly after Friday prayers, police said.

Amnesty report slams global abuses

Amnesty International has accused the United States, Russia and China of ignoring human rights violations by allies and failing to open their own records to scrutiny in its annual survey.

The human rights organisation took Washington to task for the failure of Barack Obama, the US president, to close its prison camp at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba despite promising to do so.

US cartoonist apologises over Facebook Muhammad row

A cartoonist whose work inspired an internet campaign inviting people to draw images of the Prophet Muhammad has apologised for her role in the row.

Writing on her blog, Molly Norris said her satirical cartoon was “hijacked” and that the campaign was “offensive to Muslims”.

Other people set up a page on the social networking site Facebook backing an Everybody Draw Muhammad Day.

    Gaza children’s camp destroyed

    Dozens of masked men have broken into a UN-run Gaza summer camp for children and set it on fire, after beating up the guard and destroying the plastic tents.

    The men blocked Gaza Strip’s main coastal highway on Sunday before destroying the facility, one of the largest of several summer camps across the occupied Palestinian territory run by UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).

    Aid convoy sets off for Gaza

    The biggest attempt by international aid groups to break the Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip has gotten underway. 

    Nine ships under the banner, Freedom Flotilla, began their journey to Gaza on Saturday, despite warnings from Israel that they will be stopped for “breaching Israeli law”.
