Clinton in Middle East warning

The US secretary of state has warned Syria and Iran of taking actions that threaten the security of Israel, saying that Washington’s commitment to its traditional ally is “unshakeable”.

Hillary Clinton said that the transfer of sophisticated weaponry to Lebanon’s Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas movement by Syria, as well as Iran’s nuclear ambitions, could destabilise the region.

Malcolm X gunman released on parole after 45 years

The only man to have admitted his role in the killing of controversial US black leader Malcolm X has been released from prison on parole.

Thomas Hagan, 69, was released from a New York jail 45 years after the assassination, officials confirmed.

Hagan said he was one of three men who shot Malcolm X as he began a speech at Harlem’s Audubon Ballroom in 1965.

Belgian parliament votes to ban wearing of veil

 

(Reuters) – The Belgian lower house of parliament on Thursday approved a bill to ban wearing the full Islamic face veil in public, a move that could make Belgium the first European country to make the practice a criminal offence.

The draft law, cast as a security measure by proponents, was overwhelmingly backed by 136 lawmakers. Just two abstained.

Having mistresses is a French way of life, says accused polygamist

A Muslim Frenchman alleged by the country’s government to be living in a polygamous arrangement with four women and committing benefit fraud via their 12 children has hit out at the authorities, saying that keeping mistresses was the French way of life.

Palestinians ban settlement goods

Palestinian officials have passed a new law outlawing the sale of goods made in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

The law, under which offenders could face up to five years in jail or a fine of up to $14,000, was signed by Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, on Monday.

Sarkozy backs Islamic veil ban

Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, has spoken out in favour of a full ban on the Islamic veil as the government draws up a law to prohibit the garment in public spaces.

According to a government spokesman, Sarkozy told a cabinet meeting on Wednesday that the veil “hurts the dignity of women and is not acceptable in French society”.

With all the orphaned and abandoned children in need of loving homes, does anyone really believe that serving pork should be a requirement for good foster parenting? Crazy as it sounds, that’s apparently the belief of a private company authorized by the state of Maryland to place foster children. And it’s so absurd that it’s hard to conclude the real motivation is anything but religious bias.
